Scammers are getting very creative these days and it is getting harder to identify a scammer from a legitimate source. Here are 5 warning signs of student loan forgiveness scams:
- They are promising “immediate” student loan relief.
- They charge you a fee up front, which is illegal.
- They ask for personal information including your SSN.
- To try to appear legitimate, by claiming to be associated with government agencies, even using logos from The Department of Education or Treasury Department. To evaluate the legitimacy, be on the lookout for grammar and spelling mistakes and verify any phone number or information provided (complete an internet search to verify the info appears on a legitimate website). In addition, actual government websites will end in .gov. Remember, legitimate programs will not attempt to pressure you, nor will they reach out to you by phone randomly.
